Jacqui Cotter

Formerly residing in Wanaka, Jacqui started painting regularly in response to the incredible natural beauty around her.

Her works are predominantly landscapes painted in watercolour, relished for their vibrancy and immediacy, particularly for plein air work.

“I love colours, they can be so emotionally evocative. And I’m really intrigued by clouds. They are real but not really anything; clouds to me are in a sense a metaphor to the transience of existence. They can be astounding or modest, then suddenly the opposite, there and then gone, and so taken for granted. Also a great challenge to paint!”

“I’m heading towards merging my conventional landscape work with more personal psychological landscapes. You may see this in some works where the landscapes (and especially clouds) are taking on a personality of their own.”

Jacqui attended several courses at the Wanaka Autumn Arts School, including with tutors Adrienne Pavelka, Inge Doesberg and Michael Eaton.

In 2001 she won a scholarship to attend Design and Arts College in Christchurch, gaining a Certificate in Arts, with tutors Ina Johann, Inez Grim, Michael Collins and Victoria Edwards. She stayed on in Christchurch and later studied counselling, and her paintings of that time incorporated figures into surreal multi-layered landscapes of the inner and outer realms.

A mural of migrating Godwits in New Brighton was her contribution to 2011 ‘Mural Madness’.

Jacqui has exhibited in various shows in Central Otago and Canterbury.

She lives by the sea in South New Brighton, and has a campervan/ roving studio to travel into and paint our magnificent countryside.
